Fujitsu LifeBook U810 UMPC

"The LifeBook U810 (known as the LifeBook U1010 or FMV-U8240 in other markets) packs quite a few features into its 1.56 pound frame. The device features a 5.6" 1024x600 LCD, 800MHz Intel A110 processor, 1GB DDR2 memory, 40GB hard drive, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Atheros Super AG 802.11a/b/g wireless, 10/100 NIC, USB 2.0 port, VGA port, CompactFlash slot, Secure Digital slot, QWERTY keyboard and a Fingerprint sensor. The aforementioned 5.6" display screen can be used in a traditional "laptop" view for easy thumb-typing with the QWERTY keyboard or swiveled 180 degrees and laid flat atop of the keyboard to use the U810 in "slate" mode. Fujitsu says that its LifeBook U810 has a battery life of 5.5 hours via its 4-cell, 5200mAh lithium-ion battery. The LifeBook U810 is scheduled to hit stores in September and will be available with either Windows Vista Premium, or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition."While I am still hoping to make the Asus Eee my next ultra-portable, this certainly has some advantages.

Back to School with the Newest Technology

Are you prepared for the new school year? Tech related products such as flash drives are becoming more prevalent in school and universities today.

St. Louis, MO, August 6, 2007 - 4 All Memory, a trusted source for computer memory and other computer hardware accessories, is rolling out new back to school tech needs for the upcoming school year. With roughly 17.6 million students enrolled in college this year (from the Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2007), back to school tech products are in high demand; anything from memory upgrades to portable mice to laptop carrying cases.

High schools and especially colleges are now starting to set requirements for the computers and operating systems that students need to bring, USB drives necessary, as well as other miscellaneous items that students may feel will help them with their academics.

Hot demand and a massive battery recall are causing shortages of key components for the notebook computer industry, analysts and companies say.

The worst case scenario for users is the likelihood of fewer deals for new notebook computers over the next five months because PC manufacturers are paying a premium for components and have to pass those higher costs down the PC supply chain. Users are also likely to see fewer discounts and other promotions, such as extra DRAM or a bigger hard disk drive (HDD).

What normally happens during a component shortage is that PC vendors will adjust the makeup of the notebook PC to find savings elsewhere and ensure a constant price for users. For example, using less DRAM (dynamic-RAM) memory in a laptop can reduce the cost a tad, to make up for a higher priced laptop battery.

Acer Aspire 7720G

If weve taken anything away from our past experiences with Acers products, its that they've generally offered great value and, with the Aspire 7720G, its business as usual. For its asking price, you get a bang up-to-date Santa Rosa notebook, which packs in a 2GHz dual-core CPU, a gigabyte of memory and, for movie buffs, a HD (High Definition) DVD optical drive. The Acer also features a built-in Dolby sound system with a thumping subwoofer but, if youd rather hook it up to your home theatre, you can do that too thanks to an optical output port. For gamers, this Aspire offers AMDs new Mobility Radeon HD 2300 GPU, which offers DirectX 10- and Shader Model 4.0-support. The only other laptop capable of this, is the more costly Asus G1S. The 7720G is relaxing to work on thanks to its feather-touch-sensitive keyboard and responsive trackpad.

Sony Vaio TZ18GN Features Solid State Drive (SSD)

There's a continual push away from the spinning platters of old and the solid stateness of new. The Sony VAIO TZ18GN is an 11.1-inch ultraportable notebook that comes equipped with a SSD, instead of a conventional hard disk drive. Because they've gone with solid state memory, this Vaio is said to be faster, lighter, and more power efficient than its HDD-based predecessor. The VAIO TZ18GN weighs just 1.15 kilograms and boasts a very formidable battery life of 11.5 hours on a single charge. They say that this is about a half hour more juice than the HDD notebook. On the downside, you'll be sacrificing a fair bit of storage, because this laptop only comes with a 32GB SSD, rather than the 100GB HDD you would normally get. Other vitals include an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 8x DVD-DL burner (no Blu-ray), Windows Vista, and 1GB of RAM with the (heavily recommended) option of upgrading to 2GB.

Laptops that make the grade for students

Good news for students facing the inevitable computer upgrade: There's never been a better time to buy a new PC.

Not only are computers becoming incredibly powerful and packed with convenient features - such as wireless connectivity and memory card readers - but prices are at an all-time low.

What's more, PCs are also replacing other home technologies these days, including stereo systems (thanks to MP3s and Internet radio stations), telephones (thanks to webcams) and televisions (thanks to broadband video).

Despite being slightly more expensive than their stationary desktop counterparts, laptop computers (also referred to as "notebooks"), are more ideal for a student's lifestyle since they can bring the computer with them wherever they go - be it a university lecture hall, study session in the library or in or around the home (or dorm room).
