Toyota's decision was prompted by worries that the batteries could overheat, catch fire or even explode, the Wall Street Journal today reported in its online edition, quoting unnamed Toyota executives. It said such fears were heightened by problems with similar batteries made by Sony Corp. for laptop computers which prompted a massive recall last year. The Japanese auto giant, which is enjoying brisk sales of its fuel-efficient vehicles, was planning to launch a dozen hybrids using the new lithium-ion battery technology in the US market between 2008 and 2010, the report said. A delay would give its rivals such as General Motors Corp.

Toyota's decision was prompted by worries that the batteries could overheat, catch fire or even explode, the Wall Street Journal reported in its online edition, quoting unnamed Toyota executives. It said such fears were heightened by problems with similar batteries made by Sony Corp for laptop computers which prompted a massive recall last year. Toyota, which is enjoying brisk sales of its fuel-efficient vehicles, was planning to launch a dozen hybrids using the new lithium-ion battery technology in the US market between 2008 and 2010, the report said. Toyota hybrids currently use nickel-metal-hydride batteries.
Nokia warning affects 46 million cellphone batteries
Nokia issued a product advisory Tuesday, warning that as many as 46 million cellphone batteries could be faulty and pose a risk of overheating. The advisory applies to BL-5C batteries manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. from December 2005 to November 2006, the Finnish company said. Any BL-5Cs or any other battery type manufactured outside of those dates are not considered a risk. A Nokia BL-C5 battery. Customers can find if their battery is affected by punching the two-line product identification number into Nokia's website. "Consumers with a BL-5C battery subject to this advisory should note that all of the approximately 100 incidents have occurred while charging the battery," the Finnish company said. "According to Nokia's knowledge, this issue does not affect any other use of the mobile device." The advisory affects seven models of phone sold in Canada.
Demo derby set at Tonopah oval
TONOPAH -- Tonopah Speedway will host a Nevada State Championship demolition derby Aug. 11. The winner will take home the largest purse in west coast derby history -- $5,000. Pits and sign-ups for the event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the show beginning at 3 p.m. The demolition derby is sponsored by the Tonopah Truck Auto Plaza. Entries are already filing in, according to speedway officials. Prices are $75 pre-entry and $100 at the gate. Spectators will be admitted for $10 for adults, 6 to 12-year olds for $5, and under age five are free. All competitors must use full-size American-made rear wheel drive passenger sedans. Station wagons are all right. All glass, chrome and trim must be removed. The dash and heater core must be removed.
