| Toshiba Recalls More Sony Batteries
Toshiba is recalling 5,100 laptop batteries sold around the world after three instances of the batteries catching fire, two in Japan and one in Australia. Affected batteries were manufactured by Sony in December 2005 for Toshiba's Dynabook, Dynabook Satellite, Satellite and Tecra lines. The computer maker said the batteries in question were not part of last year's massive recall of Sony batteries, which affected over 10 million units shipped by Dell, Lenovo, Apple and Sony itself. The problems are caused by metal particles falling into a battery during production, causing it to short circuit. Toshiba previously recalled 340,000 batteries, and the latest recall follows one from Gateway last month. .

A sail to remember
Nothing describes Mike Hirkos sailing adventure better than perseverance and self-sufficiency. After flying the world as an Air Force lieutenant colonel, the Raft Island resident switched his means of navigating the world. Hirko was taking his passion for sailing to a new level. From the sky to the sea, Hirko is a man of long distances. His hunger for a challenge reached new heights in May, when he attempted to sail from Florida to Gig Harbor. The experience, although he completed just one-tenth of his voyage, is something he will never forget. Despite seven days of extreme fatigue and mysterious boat malfunctioning, Hirko blames himself for not being fully prepared. Hirko traded his former boat, Nolhi, for a 1979 42-footer named Destiny. It has a long keel and fiberglass deck but his dream sail remains in New Zealand.

Verizon Wireless has partnered with the Brockton Rox professional baseball team, the South Shore No Place for Hate Coalition, and the White Ribbon Campaign, to strike out hate and violence. The organizations collaborated on a Plymouth County campaign to raise awareness about and reduce violence, which incorporated a wireless phone collection drive. Through its national philanthropic HopeLife program, Verizon Wireless collects used wireless phones, batteries and accessories from any provider and in any condition for recycling through the program. The result is phones with airtime, cash grants and a variety of support programs donated to local shelters, nonprofit organizations and law enforcement agencies that focus on domestic violence prevention. Verizon Wireless PR manager and HopeLine administrator Michael Murphy donated $1,000 cash to Kathy Spears, director of the South Shore Women's Center, for its work to end domestic violence.

MySpace Mobile Invades Canada via Rogers Wireless
Canadians might not be able to get their hands on some Helio action, but they are no longer left out in the cold when it comes to MySpace Mobile. Rogers Wireless has agreed an exclusive partnership with MySpace, bringing the social networking craze to Rogers Wireless cell phones. Available on "select mobile phones", MySpace Mobile gives Canadian networkers the ability to fiddle with their MySpace profiles while on the road, as well as do many of the MySpace things that they do on their computers, like posting comments and blog entries, searching for friends, responding to mail, and viewing bulletins. This deal is the first mobile partnership in Canada for MySpace. MySpace has been localized for Canadian users via the French and English-language sites. I'm personally more a fan of Facebook than MySpace, but to each their own.
